Description

Mission Next Gen Platform Dev/Demo

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is focused on high-impact, multi-domain science and technology (S&T) solutions that drive innovation now while laying the groundwork for the Air and Space Forces to win the future fight. The AFRL effectively synchronizes the Department of the Air Force (DAF) S&T enterprise and workforce to align towards the most consequential DAF priorities and accelerate the delivery of game-changing S&T. This program oversees the engineering and demonstration of advanced Department of Air Force nuclear delivery system components and technologies that support integrated nuclear deterrence operations missions. Next Generation Platform Development/Demonstration efforts are accomplished through the design, development, integration, experimentation, and evaluation of specific technologies which will enable future delivery of multiple Government Reference Designs and Government Reference Vehicles. These technologies include aeroshell modeling and re-entry system materials manufacturing; fuzing technologies for improved system trajectory performance; advanced guidance, navigation, and control systems; strategic radiation-hardened communications in representative operational nuclear environments; and the integration, experimentation, and evaluation with respect to specialized nuclear expertise and infrastructure. This program supports Department of Defense priorities to revitalize enduring nuclear deterrence operations by modernizing and demonstrating the specialized expertise, infrastructure, and technologies necessary to address, and respond to, current and emerging multi-peer-contested nuclear environments. This effort will develop the advanced technologies necessary to effectively address peer threats and maintain operational effectiveness in a cost-effective manner by reducing technical and programmatic risks associated with the execution of collective nuclear modernization activities. Program Element 0603211F, Project 634094, was realigned into this Program Element 0603273F, Project 634094, to enhance transparency and traceability of the Nuclear Science & Technology portfolio. This program element may include necessary expenses to support operation and maintenance activities to manage, execute, and deliver science and technology capabilities. This program is in Budget Activity 3, Advanced Technology Development because this budget activity includes development of subsystems and components and efforts to integrate subsystems and components into system prototypes for field experiments and/or tests in a simulated environment.

Advanced Fuzing Technologies

Develop Next Generation fuzing solutions that maintain operational effectiveness against emerging targeting challenges, improve reliability on non-ballistic nuclear re-entry vehicles, and develop alternative safety and surety features required for nuclear systems.

Integration, Experimentation, and Evaluation Solutions

Development of specialized nuclear re-entry system expertise and infrastructure through integration and experimentation efforts. This effort supports current and future nuclear re-entry systems development and component Technology Readiness Level maturation through Government Reference Design characterizations in laboratory environments representative of relevant and representative environments.

Advanced Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) Technologies

Develop Next Generation strategic level, radiation-hardened Guidance, Navigation, and Control technologies and solutions. These technologies include sensors, navigational systems, aides, and control elements to support Guidance, Navigation, and Control requirements for relevant nuclear re-entry system environments.

Aeroshell Technologies

Develop advanced aeroshell flight dynamics hardware, software, and material manufacturing technologies critical to nuclear re-entry system flight testing in relevant and representative environments.
