Description
Description — MQ-9 Mods
The MQ-9 Reaper procurement encompasses the complete weapon system to include the Aircraft, sensors, Ground Control Station (GCS), communications equipment, weapon kits, support equipment, simulator and training devices. The system is designed with modular, open architecture that allows for mission-specific customization. To maintain operational effectiveness, ongoing modifications are implemented to standardize aircraft configurations, address reliability and safety concerns, and incorporate new capabilities driven by evolving requirements. A key aspect of this is the Air Force's MQ-9 Multi-Domain Operation (M2DO) configuration, a suite of upgrades intended to enhance the platform's viability across the spectrum of armed conflict, including enhanced communication and resilience. As of April 2025, the inventory includes 167 Block 5 MQ-9 aircraft, but the application of specific modifications will vary across the fleet due to attrition, budgetary limitations, and modifications performed by other entities. The Air Force established the MQ-9 Multi-Domain Operations (M2DO) configuration with enhancements consisting of Anti-Jamming GPS, Enhanced Power, Link 16, Open Mission System (OMS) (to include Stellar Relay and Intelligent Electronics Unit (iEU)), and Command and Control (C2) Resiliency. Funding may be used for, but is not limited to, MQ-9 Bridge or Life Of Type Buys (LOTB) to address enterprise DMS (Diminishing Manufacturing Sources) issues. The LOTB requirement may include quantities beyond established aircraft levels, as risk mitigation to prevent high-cost Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE). Efforts in this summary and associated P-3a's have been broken out into several modifications: 9151, 9152, 9154, 9155, 9159, 9164, 9167, 9168, and low-cost modifications. The FY 2026 request was reduced by -$4.080M for Advisory and Assistance Services to promote efficiencies and advance the policies of the Administration in alignment with Executive Order 14222, "Implementing the President's Department of Government Efficiency Cost Efficiency Initiative. This program has associated Research, Development Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) AF funding in MQ-9 PE 0205219F.
