Description

Mission Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP)

The Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP) program builds upon advanced materials, technologies and manufacturing processes matured under the Adaptive Engine Transition Program (which ended in FY24) to enhance adaptive propulsion system performance and size scalability key to enabling future aircraft capabilities. Embedded adaptive propulsion systems combine the fuel efficiency of high-bypass turbofan engines used by commercial airlines with the performance demanded of military fighter engines with augmenters. Increased fuel efficiency reduces energy demand and aerial tanker dependency while increasing platform range and or time on station. During peacetime, these benefits translate to reduced aerial tanker dependency during exercises and a choice between increased aircrew readiness or cost savings due to the less fuel needed. NGAP prototyping will validate the performance and maturity of its enabling advanced technologies, platform agnostic engine architectures and designs, and manufacturing processes through prototype testing. NGAP will also drive digital transformation of the propulsion industrial base to reduce future integration risks while shortening development timelines. Prior to FY 2024, the NGAP program was reported in PE 0604004F, Advanced Engine Development, Project 643608, Advanced Engine Development. This program element may include necessary civilian pay expenses required to manage, execute, and deliver weapon system capability. The use of such program funds would be in addition to the civilian pay expenses budgeted in program element 0605829F, 0605831F, 0605833F, or 0605898F. In FY 2024 $5.669 million was expended for civilian pay expenses in this program element, and in FY 2025 $7.401 million is forecasted for civilian pay expenses in this program element. This effort is in Budget Activity 4, Advanced Component Development and Prototypes (ACD&P), because efforts are necessary to evaluate integrated technologies, representative modes or prototype systems in a high fidelity and realistic operating environment.

Next Generational Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP)

The NGAP program is designing multiple adaptive engine prototypes and will complete component rig assessments; fabricate, assemble, test and evaluate prototype(s); characterize materials, and inform digital improvements to model-based manufacturing processes. Prototype engine assessments at sea-level, altitude, and across multiple power settings will provide data to quantify the capabilities, validate engineering models as well as the maturity of new component technologies, and reduce risk in areas such as reliability and supportability. The program will also demonstrate the scalability of an embedded adaptive propulsion system with the versatility for an augmented future fighter or non-augmented for other mission aircraft operating across various mission threads.
