Description
Mission — Advanced Engine Development
The Advanced Engine Development (AED) Program includes all efforts necessary to develop and evaluate advanced propulsion system components and prototypes in realistic environments. The program also includes all efforts to define and evaluate required modifications to commercial and military off the shelf propulsion systems for use in existing and future aircraft and munitions. These activities enable maturation and risk reduction of advanced propulsion system architectures, designs, modifications, enabling materials and technologies, and manufacturing processes for follow-on Engineering, Manufacturing and Development and integration efforts. Prototyping and assessments of the prototypes at sea-level, simulated altitudes, and durability assessments across multiple power settings provides data to validate system performance, calibrate engineering models, and ensure appropriate manufacturing and technology readiness for future propulsion system development and platform integration as well as potential insertion into already fielded propulsion systems. This program element may include necessary civilian pay expenses required to manage, execute, and deliver weapon system capability. The use of such program funds would be in addition to the civilian pay expenses budgeted in program element 0605829F, 0605831F, 0605833F, or 0605898F. In FY 2024 $4.971 million was expended for civilian pay expenses in this program element, and in FY 2025 $0.0 million is forecasted for civilian pay expenses in this program element. This effort is in Budget Activity 4, Advanced Component Development and Prototypes (ACD&P), because efforts are necessary to evaluate integrated technologies, representative modes or prototype systems in a high fidelity and realistic operating environment.
Mission — Advanced Engine Technologies
Advanced Engine Technology activities expand industrial base knowledge and skills enabling future advanced propulsion system architectures and designs; propulsion systems include the inlet, engine and nozzle. Activities include: - Addressing manufacturing producibility, affordability, quality, risks and issues throughout the development process to improve product quality; enhance manufacturing processes; and strengthen the supply chain. - Maturing alloy, coatings, and composites to meet next generation component requirements through composite trials and component testing. - Developing Model Based Inspections techniques and increasing digital collaboration between Government and Industry to expand capability and capacity for future application. - Expanding use of Model Based Systems Engineering and incorporating learnings into advanced combat engine model development.

Prototyping and assessments of the prototypes at sea-level, simulated altitudes, and durability assessments across multiple power settings provide data to validate performance, calibrate engineering models, and ensure appropriate manufacturing and technology readiness for future propulsion system development and platform integration as well as potential insertion into already fielded propulsion systems. This project advances propulsion technologies from Advanced Technology Development (ATD) into Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) when appropriate; some propulsion technologies may transfer directly from ATD into EMD.
