Description
Mission — Materials Transition
This project develops and demonstrates advanced materials and processing technologies for fielded and planned Department of the Air Force weapon, airframe, aerospace structure, protection, and propulsion applications. Advanced materials and processes that have matured beyond applied research are characterized, critical data are collected, and critical evaluations in the proposed operating environment are performed. This design and scale-up data improves the overall affordability of promising materials and processing technologies, providing needed initial incentives for their industrial development.
Mission — Advanced Materials for Weapon Systems
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is focused on high-impact, multi-domain science & technology (S&T) solutions that drive innovation now while laying the groundwork for the Air and Space Force to win the future fight. AFRL effectively synchronizes the Department of the Air Force (DAF) S&T enterprise and workforce to align towards the most consequential DAF priorities and accelerate the delivery of game-changing S&T. This program develops and demonstrates advanced materials and process technologies to satisfy Department of the Air Force requirements in areas such as survivability, readiness, affordability, and new processes and materials. These projects ensure the Department of the Air Force weapon systems are ready and able when needed. Funds in this PE may be used to investigate specified technology advancements in air, space and/or cyber domains. In order to manage, execute, and deliver science and technology capabilities, this program element may include: necessary civilian pay expenses; expenses to support the operation and maintenance of facilities; as well as expenses related to travel, supplies, IT hardware, software and support, administrative contractor services, etc. This program is in Budget Activity 3, Advanced Technology Development because this budget activity includes development of subsystems and components and efforts to integrate subsystems and components into system prototypes for field experiments and/or tests in a simulated environment.
Mission — Electromagnetic Protection Materials
This project develops and demonstrates advanced materials and technologies to enable Department of the Air Force personnel, weapons, platforms, and mission-systems to operate with impunity in extreme electromagnetic spectrum environments. These extreme electromagnetic spectrum environments include those caused by deliberate electromagnetic radiation from Directed Energy Weapons (both laser and radio frequency) and nuclear detonation. In FY 2024 and beyond, work related to protection of space-based platforms is accomplished in PE 1206616SF: Space Advanced Technology Development/Demo; Project 633834: Project Integrated Space Technology Demonstrations; Effort: Advanced Materials for Spacecraft Resilience.
Mission — Non-Destructive Inspection Development
This project develops and demonstrates advanced nondestructive inspection and evaluation technologies to monitor performance integrity and to detect failure causing conditions in weapon systems components and materials. Nondestructive inspection and evaluation capabilities greatly influence and/or limit many design, manufacturing, and maintenance practices. This project provides technology to satisfy Department of the Air Force requirements to extend the lifetime of current systems through increased reliability and cost-effectiveness at field and depot maintenance levels to include reduced manhours through automation. Equally important is assuring manufacturing quality, integrity, and safety requirements are built in.

Electromagnetic Protection for Personnel
In FY 2026, this effort was renamed from "Aircrew Protection" to "Electromagnetic Protection for Personnel" to better describe the scope of the work. This effort develops and demonstrates materials technologies that enhance protection for Department of the Air Force personnel to ensure safety and to enable crews to perform required missions in a threat environment.
Electromagnetic Protection for Aerospace Systems
In FY 2026, this effort was renamed from "Aerospace Systems Protection" to "Electromagnetic Protection for Aerospace Systems" to better reflect the scope of the technology. This project develops and demonstrates electromagnetic protection technologies that enable survivability of Department of the Air Force platforms, systems, and components to ensure mission effectiveness in extreme electromagnetic spectrum environments.
Advanced System Monitoring Technologies
In FY 2026, the work and funding associated with the Special Material Inspection Technologies effort in this Project, will be merged into this effort to accelerate technological advancement in inspection and monitoring of specialty materials. Development and transition advanced nondestructive inspection/evaluation (NDI/E) capabilities for data acquisition, analysis, and integration for enhanced damage detection and characterization in composite and specialty materials coatings on aircraft. This supports just-in-time maintenance, increased mission availability, and enables more affordable inspections, including automated robotic technologies.
Special Material Inspection Technologies
In FY 2026, within this Project, the work and funding of the Special Material Inspection Technologies effort will be consolidated into the Advanced System Monitoring Technologies effort to synergistically accelerate technological advancements in the inspection and monitoring of specialty materials. Develop and demonstrate advanced inspection technologies supporting special material systems to enhance affordability and ensure full performance and survivability.
Air Vehicle Materials Technologies
Develop and demonstrate materials and processes technologies for air vehicle and subsystems to enhance lift, propulsion, power generation management, survivability, and affordability of air vehicles.
Counter Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Technologies
Develop and demonstrate multiple physical and technical methods for the degradation of adversarial Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) collection and analysis supporting resilient basing and Agile Combat Employment Concepts of Operations (CONEMPS). These efforts will delay enemy decisions and actions, furthering Department of the Air Force mission goals. This work directly supports both passive airbase defense and overall theater operations.
