Description

Description Ground Based Strategic Deterrent

The Secretary of Defense's Nunn-McCurdy decision on July 8, 2024 recertified the LGM-35A Sentinel program. The Milestone Decision Authority rescinded the 2020 Milestone B decision which allows the Program Office to focus on the reassessment and refinement of requirements as they translate to system specifications, technical maturation of the system design, and cost and schedule risk mitigation strategies. The Program Office will work with stakeholders to update program requirements, quantities, and milestones to align with the outcomes of the reassessments and refinements. To differentiate between Sentinel Systems Directorate and the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) now known as the Sentinel program, the GBSD program has been designated as the LGM-35A Sentinel. The LGM-35A Sentinel incorporates the Sentinel weapon system which is called out in related Sentinel System Directorate portfolio programs that includes Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Reentry Vehicles and ICBM Fuze Modernization. The LGM-35A Sentinel will produce and deploy a replacement for the current Minuteman III (MM III) Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) weapon system in order to maintain a safe, secure, reliable, and effective nuclear deterrent. The LGM-35A Sentinel program delivers a fully integrated weapon system to lower lifecycle costs and to close key capability gaps and vulnerabilities identified in the LGM-35A Sentinel Capabilities Based Assessment, LGM-35A Sentinel Capabilities Development Document, and the LGM-35A Sentinel Analysis of Alternatives. Sentinel mitigates ground based deterrent degradation due to MM III component age-out and attrition. The LGM-35A Sentinel program includes prime contractor development of applicable support equipment, data, flight test hardware and infrastructure, and training systems material, as well as examination and mitigation of risk during the MM III to LGM-35A Sentinel transition. This program includes nuclear surety certification and system vulnerability assessments. During the now-rescinded Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase, the LGM-35A Sentinel program executed 1) government system engineering, analytics, and test capability development; 2) air vehicle equipment development; 3) command & launch systems development; 4) infrastructure and deployment development; 5) support systems development; and 6) weapon system integration. While the program has reverted to a pre-Milestone B posture, activities that were conducted in EMD are still being performed. The Air Force developed a new Aerospace Vehicle Equipment (AVE) (flight system) for the LGM-35A Sentinel weapon system to replace the MM III flight system. The LGM-35A Sentinel AVE consists of a boost propulsion subsystem, a post-boost propulsion subsystem, a guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) subsystem, and a re-entry subsystem. The boost propulsion subsystem is comprised of a 3-stage solid rocket booster. The post-boost propulsion subsystem (PBPS) is comprised of a liquid-fueled rocket propulsion system integrated into a post-boost attitude control module (PBACM) structure, as well as all guidance, navigation, and control components. Milestone dates are subject to change due to acquisition strategy revisions. The event schedule updates will be provided once the revisions are completed.
