Description
Description — AH-64 MODS
The AH-64 Mods program is required to address operational mandates and obsolescence. It is necessary for the continued relevance, resilience, operational performance and readiness of the Army's attack helicopter fleet. The AH-64 Mods Program allows for near-term operationally driven improvements to the Apache fleet, focusing on deployment lessons learned, and reliability improvements. Improvements will occur to the Airframe, Armament, Communications, Manned / Unmanned Teaming, Navigation, Sensors, Survivability, Support Elements, and Training Systems. Examples of modifications include: Selected Component Recapitalization, Airframe and Sensor Capability upgrades, Software upgrades, Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), trainer concurrency, Computer/Processing and Data Display and Control upgrades. The AH-64D/AH-64E inventory crossover point (370 AH-64D / 370 AH-64E) occurred in October 2020. These modernization efforts are required to ensure the Longbow Apache remains a ready and relevant Warfighter asset. The AH-64 Mods program is critical to ensure the Apache maintains its current level of capability.
Justification
Justification — AH-64 MODS
FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $125.236 million supports modification and service life extension efforts for the Airframe, Armament, Manned/Unmanned Teaming, Mission Command, Sensors, Survivability, Support Elements, and Training Systems. FY 2025 to FY 2026 funding increased due to prioritization and leadership decisions to increase funding for Improved Tail Rotor Blade (ITRB) development and fielding. The current Apache Tail Rotor metal blade has multiple reliability issues that prohibit the blade from reaching its design life of 6404 hours. ITRB qualification objective is to design, test, integrate and produce a structurally qualified blade that provides greater damage tolerance and performance compared to the existing metallic tail rotor blade. Additional benefits include improved producibility, improved damage inspection/repair criteria, erosion protection, and maintainability and reliability enhancements over that of the legacy design to meet the AH-64E (AVNS-PRF-10750) system specification requirements. The FY 2026 request was reduced by $1.6 million for Advisory and Assistance Services to promote efficiencies and advance the policies of the Administration in alignment with Executive Order 14222, "Implementing the President's Department of Government Efficiency Cost Efficiency Initiative." AH-64 MODS is part of the Army Transformation Initiative.
