Description
Description — Joint Air-to-Ground MSLS (JAGM)
The AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) program is an Army-led, Acquisition Category (ACAT) 1C Major Defense Acquisition Program (MDAP) with joint interest from Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. JAGM is the Army's, multi-mode, air-to-ground munition replacing HELLFIRE (HF) and HF Longbow tactical missiles. JAGM is a full-rate production item that addresses five Army Aviation extremely high risk and two high risk capability gaps. JAGM is the only munition that is effective against all target sets listed in the US Army Aviation Lethality Strategy. JAGM is the primary precision munition for attack helicopter operations and the only precision missile in production that is qualified airworthy for Army Aviation attack helicopter operations. JAGM is used for destruction of high-value land and maritime targets, moving or stationary, launches from any platform currently firing HF from a US Army-issued M299 launcher. The JAGM range is 8km, and the manufacturer has demonstrated range capability to 16km, the objective range requirement. 16km would provide missile parity with Apache Helicopter advanced sensors and make Apache crews capable of engaging Army Aviation medium range targets. JAGM's dual-mode seeker utilizes a Millimeter Wave (MMW) radar and Semi-Active Laser (SAL), multi-mode guidance section. The multi-mode capability provides fire-and-forget and precision-point targeting as well as unique, blended modes of each, for improved capability over legacy munitions. The JAGM Captive Air Training Missile (CATM) is an airworthy training missile that consists of a JAGM guidance section that receives crew inputs for target engagement training and to evaluate gunnery requirements without expending live ordinance.
Justification
Justification — Joint Air-to-Ground MSLS (JAGM)
Total FY 2026 procurement dollars in the amount of $84.667 million support the procurement of 178 missiles and 25 Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM). Funding increase from FY 2025 to FY 2026 is due to an increased requirement for JAGM missiles. The Army intends to convert any price advantage created through contract negotiations, other service procurement, and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to increase procurement of JAGM and address safety, reliability, affordability, producibility and obsolescence. The Air-to-Ground Missile Systems Product Office is the procurement agent for all services. The Army Acquisition Objective is 20,303. In accordance with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (P.L. 110-181), this item is necessary for use by the active and reserve components of the Armed Forces for homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities.
