This budget line includes .50 CAL ALL TYPES. (E06700) CTG .50 Caliber M8, Armor Piercing Incendiary (API) Cartridge, packed single round, is used in the M107 and M82A1 Long Range Sniper Rifles. This cartridge is identified with a gray bullet tip. This is used in .50 Caliber Sniper training, a cost-effective training round over the more expensive MK211 Long Range Sniper ammunition and minimizes training range limitations. This item is Code A, approved for service use. (E06903) CTG .50 Caliber M8/M20 Tracer, Armor Piercing Incendiary (API) linked 4 to 1 in a 100-cartridge belt with the M9 link for use in the M2, M2A1, and M3 Machine Gun. M8 is identified with a gray bullet tip. M20 is identified with a red bullet tip with a gray annulus. This item is Code A, approved for service use. (E07100) CTG .50 Caliber Cartridge Ball M33 is linked in 100-cartridge belts with the M9 link, for use in the M2, M2A1, and M3 Machine Gun. M33 is identified with a plain bullet tip. This item is Code A, approved for service use. (E07200) CTG .50 Caliber Cartridge, Ball M33 and Cartridge, Tracer M17 linked 4 to 1 in a 100-cartridge belt with the M9 link for use in M2, M2A1, and M3 Machine Gun against unarmored targets. The tracer cartridge permits observation of the bullet's trajectory to the point of impact. M17 is identified with a brown bullet tip. M33 is identified with a plain bullet tip. This item is Code A, approved for service use. (E07302) CTG .50 Caliber Blank Cartridge, M1A1 linked in a 100-cartridge belt with the M9 link for use in the M2 and M2A1 Machine Gun. This cartridge is a blank cartridge with a rosette crimp at the mouth used to simulate firing in training exercises in conjunction with the M19 Blank Firing Attachment (BFA). This item is Code A, approved for service use. (E07307) .50 Caliber Reduced Range Cartridges, XM1181/XM1199, are issued in a 100 cartridge belt with the M9 link for use in the M2 machine gun family. These cartridges are conventional small-caliber munitions with a newly designed projectile used for live fire training on ranges with reduced Surface Danger Zones (SDZ). They are intended for training use only and are not suitable for combat. These items are Code B, not approved for service use. (F88000) .50 Caliber Saboted Light Armor Penetrator (SLAP), M903 cartridge consists of a low-drag, tungsten-alloy penetrator encased in a lightweight plastic sabot loaded into otherwise conventional Caliber .50 cartridge components. The projectile assembly is launched at high velocity and the sabot is discarded shortly after muzzle exit. The companion M962 SLAP-Tracer cartridge is similar in configuration to the M903 except that the penetrator has a cavity containing tracer mix. The M962 provides the precision of delivery necessary to take full advantage of the penetrator cartridge capability. This ammunition is linked to four M903 SLAP to one M962 tracer for use in the M2 Heavy Barrel Machine Gun. The SLAP is used in combat against current and future light armored targets and Armored Attack Helicopters (AAHs). The M903 provides the M2 Machine Gun with a more effective capability against improved armored vehicles increasing penetration of light armor by a factor of two to three times at any given range over that of currently available ammunition. The item is Code A, approved for service use.
Justification
Justification — CTG, .50 Cal, All Types
FY 2026 Base Budget supports critical Army Title 10 war reserve/operational, training, and test requirements IAW DoD Instruction 3000.04 (Munitions Requirements Process) and AR 5-13 (Total Army Munitions Requirements Process and Prioritization System). War reserve requirements support OSD-approved Combatant Commander Operational Plans, Homeland Defense, and other OSD-directed missions. Training requirements support individual and collective training of Active and Reserve Component forces at Army schools, home station, and the combined training centers. Test requirements support the development, fielding, safety, and quality assurance of Army munitions and equipment throughout their life cycle. In accordance with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (P.L. 110-181), this item is necessary for use by the active and reserve components of the Armed Forces for homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities. FY 2026 Budget supports the Minimum Sustaining Rates at both Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) as well as the Second Source facility in Oxford, MS. FY 2026 Total dollars in the amount of $78.199 million support procurement of 17.662 million rounds. The Army intends to convert any price advantage created through contract negotiations, other service procurement, and/or Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to increase procurement of .50 CAL ALL TYPES when possible. (E06700) CTG .50 Caliber M8, Armor Piercing Incendiary (API) Cartridge is a training standard item used in training and combat. There is no FY 2026 budget request for this funding line. Type classification date: 1944 (E06903) CTG .50 Caliber M8/M20 Tracer, Armor Piercing Incendiary (API) linked 4 to 1 in a 100-round belt with the M9 link. This is a training standard item used in training and combat. There is no FY 2026 budget request for this funding line. Type classification date: M8 1944, M17 1950, M20 1953. (E07100) CTG .50 Caliber Cartridge Ball M33 is linked in 100 round belts with the M9 link. This is a training standard item used in training and combat. The FY 2026 request supports annual training and builds a war reserve inventory in accordance with the Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 procurement dollars in the amount of $4.038 million support the procurement of 1.342 million .50 Caliber Cartridge Ball M33 Cartridges. FY 2026 Base dollars in the amount of $0.183 million support the enduring COCOM requirement for procurement of 0.069 million .50 Caliber Cartridge Ball M33 Cartridges to deter potential adversaries and support Operation Atlantic Resolve (OAR). This is an increase of $0.001 million from the FY 2025 Request. Type classification date: 1951 (E07200) CTG .50 Caliber Cartridge, Ball M33 and Cartridge, Tracer M17 linked 4 to 1 in a 100-round belt with the M9 link. This is a training standard item used in training and combat. The FY 2026 request supports annual training and builds a war reserve inventory in accordance with the Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $20.846 million supports the procurement of 6.129 million M33 .50 Caliber Ball Cartridges linked with M17 Tracer Cartridges. Type classification date: 1968 (E07302) CTG .50 Caliber Blank Cartridge, M1A1 linked with the M9 link. This is a training unique item not used in combat. The FY 2026 request supports annual training and builds a depot level in accordance with the Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $5.987 million supports the procurement of 2.545 million .50 Caliber Blank Cartridge, M1A1 Cartridges. Type classification date: 1980 (E07307).50 Caliber Reduced Range Cartridges - These are training unique items, not used in combat. The FY 2026 request supports annual training and builds a depot level in accordance with the Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $34.823 million supports the procurement of 7.129 million .50 Caliber Reduced Range Cartridges. Type classification date: Pending 2025 (F88000) .50 Caliber Saboted Light Armor Penetrator (SLAP), M903 cartridge. This is a war reserve item used in combat. The FY 2026 request builds a war reserve inventory in accordance with Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $12.322 million supports the procurement of 0.448 million Cartridges. Type classification date: March 1993
