The GP ammunition is a training standard item used in both combat and training. This item is Code B, not approved for service use. (E06012) CTG 6.8MM SPECIAL PURPOSE 4SP/1TRCR LINKED (XM1184) is a 6.8mm Ball Cartridge / Special Purpose (SP) ammunition packed linked belts with a 6.8mm GP Tracer Cartridge for use in the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) Automatic Rifle. The SP Ball Cartridges utilizes projectiles with an exposed tip surrounded by a copper jacket. This ammunition is intended for use against a broad spectrum of hard targets. The SP ammunition is a combat-only war reserve item. This item is Code B, not approved for service use. (E06014) CTG 6.8MM REDUCED RANGE ROUND is a 6.8mm Ball Cartridge; a training standard item used for training purposes only. The ammunition is packed in cartons and linked belts for use in the NGSW Rifle and Automatic Rifle. It is intended to perform similarly to the combat variants and is intended for use on military installations with Surface Danger Zone (SDZ) restrictions. (E06018) CTG. 6.8MM XM1186 GP LNKD is a 6.8mm Ball Cartridge / General Purpose (GP) ammunition packed linked belts for use in the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) Automatic Rifle. Justification
Justification — NEXT GENERATION SQUAD WEAPON AMMUNITION
FY 2026 Base Budget supports critical Army Title 10 war reserve/operational, training, and test requirements in accordance with Department of Defense (DoD) Instruction 3000.04 (Munitions Requirements Process) and Army Regulation (AR) 5-13 (Total Army Munitions Requirements Process and Prioritization System). War reserve requirements support Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) approved Combatant Commander Operational Plans, Homeland Defense, and other OSD-directed missions. Training requirements support individual and collective training of Active and Reserve Component forces at Army schools, home station, and the combined training centers. Test requirements support the development, fielding, safety, and quality assurance of Army munitions and equipment throughout their life cycle. In accordance with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (P.L. 110-181), this item is necessary for use by the active and reserve components of the Armed Forces for homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities. The FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $426.177 million supports procurement of 183.075 million cartridges. The Army intends to convert any price advantage created through contract negotiations, other service procurement, and/or Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to increase procurement of NEXT GENERATION SQUAD WEAPON AMMUNITION (NGSW-A) when possible. Funding for this ammunition procurement budget item aligns with the Army's modernization priorities in support of the National Defense Strategy. The NGSW-A program is a key Army Modernization Priority and supports the Soldier Lethality Cross Functional Team (CFT) objectives. The NGSW-A program is part of the Army Transformation Initiative (ATI). (E06002) CTG. 6.8MM GENERAL PURPOSE COMBAT ROUND / General Purpose (GP) ammunition is a training standard item used in both combat and training. FY 2026 request supports annual training and builds a war reserve inventory in accordance with the Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base Procurement dollars in the amount of $94.491 million supports the procurement of 37.836 million GP cartridges. Type classification date: Projected 3rd Quarter FY 2025. (E06012) CTG 6.8MM SPECIAL PURPOSE 4SP/1TRCR LINKED ammunition is a war reserve item used in combat. FY 2026 request builds a war reserve inventory in accordance with the Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base Procurement dollars in the amount of $6.715 million supports the procurement of 0.337 million cartridges. FY 2026 request builds a war reserve inventory in accordance with Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base Procurement dollars in the amount of $20.452 million supports the procurement of 0.902 million SP cartridges. Type classification date: Projected 4th Quarter FY 2026.
