Description

Description Reactor Power Units

The Other Procurement, Navy, Reactor Power Units budget provides for the procurement of reactor refueling cores including naval nuclear fuel work (and the completion of core assembly to support select SSN and CVN refueling). Reactor refueling cores are the assemblies of nuclear fuel and associated structural and reactivity control equipment required for the refueling of nuclear powered ships. The procurement of these units is accomplished by the Department of Energy (DOE) using the Economy Act of 1932, as amended and codified in 31 USC 1535. The DOE has developed production lines to fabricate these units at the sole remaining core manufacturer. Reactor refueling core procurements are required to support scheduled refueling of operational ships and are budgeted on a lead-time basis while preserving workload stability and efficiency.
