Description
Mission — Advanced Shipyard Technology
The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Navigation Plan of 2024 priorities and objectives includes addressing warfighter maintenance and construction challenges. AST aligns with these priorities by developing, maturing, and demonstrating technology for rapid acquisition for maintenance operations at the naval shipyards. AST funding facilitates collaboration between government, academia, and industry, and is an innovative approach to leverage public/private cooperation agreements, target technology and process solutions through an ongoing, iterative approach. FY 2026 funds will focus efforts on Robotic Process Automation (RPA). Development efforts are outlined in the FY 2026 and follow plans. Rapidly maturing technologies in the AST focus areas are necessary to meet the CNO's target of 80% operationally available submarines. Funding ensures widespread adoption of innovative improvements, enhancing proficiency and productivity of the public naval shipyard workforce to achieve the continuous product and process improvements necessary for improved Navy ship repair costs, and an overall reduction in availability duration. Reducing availability durations saves on average $1M per day of maintenance delay. This program requires proper resourcing to cover additional projects, initiatives, and for proper implementation and sustainment of efforts.

The Advanced Shipyard Technology (AST) seeks to improve the productivity, quality, and reduce costs of maintenance performed by the Navy public shipyards. The resulting technologies developed by this program benefit both the naval shipyard and the US Navy.
