Description

Mission High Power Solid State Laser Technology

This project develops and demonstrates integrated, state of the art, high energy laser (HEL) weapon demonstrator systems to satisfy Department of the Air Force requirements in areas including, counter adversary unmanned aerial systems (c-UAS), counter adversary intelligence/surveillance/reconnaissance (c-ISR), and counter adversary missiles (c-Missile) for High Value Airborne Asset (HVAA) protection and point defense. Technologies developed under PE 0602605F (Directed Energy Technology), 625173 (Laser Technology), feed directly into this project.

Mission High Power Microwave Development and Integration

This project develops and demonstrates high power microwave and other unconventional electromagnetic field generation and transmission technologies that can be integrated into future weapon systems to support a wide range of the Department of the Air Force missions such as air base defense or the damage/destruction of an adversary's electronic infrastructure. It also provides inputs to the susceptibility, vulnerability, and lethality databases used across the Department of Defense to understand thresholds for scalable effects of directed energy weapons.

Mission Advanced Weapons Technology

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is focused on high-impact, multi-domain science & technology (S&T) solutions that drive innovation now while laying the groundwork for the Air and Space Force to win the future fight. AFRL effectively synchronizes the Department of the Air Force (DAF) S&T enterprise and workforce to align towards the most consequential DAF priorities and accelerate the delivery of game-changing S&T. This program develops and demonstrates integrated, state of the art, high energy laser (HEL) and high power electromagnetic (HPEM) directed energy (DE) weapon demonstrator systems to satisfy Department of the Air Force requirements in areas including: counter adversary unmanned aerial systems (c-UAS), counter adversary intelligence/surveillance/reconnaissance (c-ISR), counter adversary missiles (c-Missile), counter adversary electronics (c-Electronic), and other mission objectives. Efforts in this program have been coordinated through the Department of Defense Science and Technology Executive Committee process to harmonize efforts and eliminate duplication. Technologies developed under PE 0602605F (Directed Energy Technology), 624867 (Advanced Weapons & Survivability Technology) and 625173 (Laser Technology), feed directly into this program. In order to manage, execute, and deliver science and technology capabilities, this program element may include necessary civilian pay expenses; expenses to support the operation and maintenance of facilities; as well as expenses related to travel, supplies, IT hardware, software and support, administrative contractor services, etc. This program element may include necessary expenses to support the operation and maintenance of facilities to manage, execute, and deliver science and technology capabilities. This program is in Budget Activity 3, Advanced Technology Development because this budget activity includes development of subsystems and components and efforts to integrate subsystems and components into system prototypes for field experiments and/or tests in a simulated environment.

High Energy Laser/Beam Control

Develop and demonstrate integrated high energy laser (HEL) weapon demonstrators to satisfy Department of the Air Force requirements including, counter adversary unmanned aerial systems (c-UAS), counter-adversary intelligence/surveillance/reconnaissance (c-ISR), and counter-adversary missiles (c-Missile) for high value airborne asset (HVAA) protection and point defense mission objectives. This project will integrate advancements made in laser sources, optical beam combination techniques, optical beam control technologies, and optical beam propagation methodologies realized under PE 0602605F (Directed Energy Technology), 625173 (Laser Technology), onto ground-mobile and airborne platforms and demonstrate capabilities against threats of interest.
