Description
Mission — Science & Technology for Nuclear Re-entry Systems
This Program Element supports Department of Defense (DoD) priorities for enduring science and technology (S&T) for nuclear re-entry systems. For several decades, foundational nuclear R&D investments outside of major acquisition programs have been significantly reduced. This historical trend contrasts with the DoD's recent recognition of the need to invest in advanced nuclear-related components and technologies in support of the nuclear enterprise, nuclear deterrence operations, and integrated deterrence operations. This effort will provide pre-program of record advanced technology development that will effectively address evolving threats and maintain operational effectiveness while also aligning with the highest-level guidance for nuclear forces identified in the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review and National Defense Strategy. This effort will contribute to preserving the viability of the nuclear deterrent in a cost-effective manner by reducing technical and programmatic risk associated with execution of the overall nuclear modernization program. These ends will be reached by developing technologies to inform future system requirements, establishing interagency partnerships for re-entry system test platform development, and coordinating with existing programs for next generation strategic system development. In conjunction with U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM) Priorities and collaboration with Air Force, the Nuclear Delivery Systems (NDS) funding will identify and mature technologies from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 to TRL 6 via relevant ground and flight test environments.
Mission — Nuclear Delivery Systems
This project will fund advanced development of nuclear delivery technologies, subsystems, and components for reentry systems in alignment with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (USD(R&E)) guidance on relevant technology categories: Aeroshell, Fuzing, Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC), Advanced Capability, and Testing. These activities will reduce the operational, programmatic and technological risk facing modernization of Navy reentry systems. To achieve its objectives, the NDS S&T program will undertake several initiatives, including: * Developing and maturing advanced technologies through a series of experiments designated as Griffin and Peregrine. The experiments will include three Government Reference Designs (GRD) experimental reentry bodies, designated Griffin 2.0, Griffin 2.1, and Peregrine 2.0. These experimental reentry bodies will have increasing capability and will be used to evaluate and demonstrate new technologies and concepts for nuclear delivery systems. * Developing nuclear delivery system technologies through the use of a series of ground and flight tests of components and subsystems. These test will be informed by modeling and simulation and will utilize existing and new capabilities that enable a better understanding of how systems will perform in a realistic and operationally relevant environment. * Partnering with other organizations, as appropriate, to leverage their investments in relevant technology maturation that aligns with the USD(R&E) technology areas for NDS S&T. This may include investments in advanced materials, and other technologies that can be used to improve the performance and survivability of nuclear delivery systems. *Allocating resources to support GRD development and demonstration over the period of performance will ensure that the NDS S&T program has the necessary resources and funding to achieve its objectives and support the development of new nuclear delivery systems. Overall, the NDS S&T program is a critical component of the DoD's efforts to modernize its nuclear delivery systems and ensure the continued viability of the nuclear deterrent. By investing in advanced technologies and concepts, the program will help to reduce the operational, programmatic, and technological risk associated with nuclear modernization, and ensure that the United States remains a leader in nuclear deterrence. Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC)
Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) systems are advanced technologies designed to provide highly accurate and robust performance for re-entry vehicles. These systems ensure precise target delivery, even when facing sophisticated defensive measures intended to disrupt or intercept the vehicle.

Advanced Capability

This enhanced penetration capability is of paramount importance for maintaining a credible deterrent and ensuring national security. The ability to reliably defeat advanced missile defenses guarantees the re-entry vehicle's capacity to reach its intended target, even in the face of layered and technologically advanced interception attempts.
Fuzing
Advancements in fuzing technology have enabled the development of highly accurate and reliable systems for detonating nuclear warheads at optimal times and locations. These advancements are critical for maintaining a credible and effective nuclear deterrent. By ensuring detonation at the precise moment and location, these systems maximize the weapon's intended effects while minimizing unintended consequences.
Aeroshell
Program advancements include significant improvements to the aeroshell, specifically the development of advanced materials and designs crucial for protecting the re-entry vehicle during atmospheric re-entry. These advancements are paramount to enhancing the survivability and effectiveness of the re-entry vehicle. The upgraded materials are designed to withstand extreme temperatures and pressures encountered during hypersonic flight, ensuring the payload reaches its intended target.
