Description
Mission — Nuclear Weapons Support
The Theater Nuclear Weapon Storage and Security System (WS3) supports the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Nuclear Deterrence Mission in Europe. The WS3 was designed in the 1980s and fielded in the 1990s. The WS3 Vault Modernization Program (VMP) modernizes storage vault components and will address the National Security Agency (NSA) requirement to modernize the vault unlock management subsystem using modern cryptographic technologies. Finally, the VMP will resolve vault sustainment issues caused by obsolescence. Additional detailed information is classified and can be provided at higher classification levels. This program is in Budget Activity 5, System Development and Demonstration (SDD) because it has passed Milestone B approval and is conducting engineering and manufacturing development tasks aimed at meeting validated requirements prior to full rate production.

Funding in FY-2025 through FY-2029 will support development, test, and evaluation of NSA-mandated crypto update and modernization of the Theater Nuclear Weapon Storage & Security System (WS3) storage vaults.
