Description
Description — FAMILY OF WEAPON SIGHTS (FWS)
This funding line provides support to the Soldier Lethality Army Modernization priority. There are currently two production variants in the Family of Weapon Sights (FWS): FWS-Individual (FWS-I) and FWS-Sniper (FWS-S). The FWS program enables combat forces to acquire and engage targets with small arms and to conduct surveillance and fire control under day/night obscurants, no-light, and adverse weather conditions. The FWS utilizes advancements in thermal and low light level sensors to produce sights operable in-line with a day optic or in stand-alone mode. The FWS program integrates smaller pixel focal plane arrays into multiple large format sizes to improve sensitivity, clarity, and range, while simultaneously reducing the size, weight and power consumption of all variants. The FWS-I variant is a weapon mounted thermal sensor that enables Soldiers to fire quickly and accurately from any carry position and with significantly reduced exposure to enemy fire by providing a wireless zeroed weapon aimpoint in the Soldier's Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular (ENVG-B) or Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS). This funding line is a key enabler of the Army Modernization Priorities in support of day/night situational awareness for the Close Combat Soldier. The FWS-S variant mounts in-line with the Sniper's direct view optic providing a thermal imagery capability to the host weapon at the weapon's maximum effective range, plus 20% overmatch. FWS-S provides Snipers a large format display with increased pixel density that enables accurate long range engagements while maintaining day sight, extending the lethality and providing exceptional observation. This funding line provides support to the Close Combat Soldier in the area of situational awareness. The FWS-Crew Served (FWS-CS) program was terminated in FY2024. FWS-I funding supports the Army's Soldier Lethality Cross Functional Teams (SL CFT) initiatives. FWS-I Army Acquisition Objective (AAO) is 111,642. Official AAO approval is pending. This aligns with Next Generation Squad Weapons and IVAS. FWS-S AAO has been increased to 3,667.
Justification
Justification — FAMILY OF WEAPON SIGHTS (FWS)
FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $91.046 million supports the procurement of 9,163 FWS-I production systems. FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $12.561 million supports the procurement of 172 FWS-S production systems. In accordance with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (P.L. 110-181), this item is necessary for use by the active and reserve components of the Armed Forces for homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities.
