Description — Small Tactical Optical Rifle Mounted MLRF
This funding line provides support to the Close Combat Soldier in the area of situational awareness. The Small Tactical Optical Rifle Mounted (STORM) Micro-Laser Rangefinder (MLRF) is a weapon-mounted, multi-function laser system. It provides an eye safe laser rangefinder, digital compass, Infrared (IR) and visible aiming lights, and an IR illuminator for far target location with continuous range, accuracy, weight and power performance enhanced capabilities. STORM is a laser range finder supporting squad and unit level formations. When connected to a Precision Lightweight Global Receiver/Defense Advanced Global Positioning System (GPS) Receiver (PLGR/DAGR), the STORM provides range and direction information to develop accurate and timely far target locations. The STORM addresses the lack of depth perception for night applications through use of its IR illuminator and rangefinder. The latest STORM variant includes a ballistic calculator for Soldiers. Funding in this project aligns with the National Defense Strategy. The Army Acquisition Objective (AAO) for this program is 15,570.
Justification
Justification — Small Tactical Optical Rifle Mounted MLRF
FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $2.111 million supports the prioritized fielding of STORM II systems to Snipers, Mortar, Institutional Training Requirements, USASOC and Air Defense Dismounted authorizations. Also funds the prime contractor to provide Interim Contractor Maintenance Support, track potential parts obsolescence, track trends in field usage and repair data, conduct annual reliability testing and, if required, make updates to the system.
