This budget line includes 5.56MM ALL TYPES. (E01100) 5.56mm Blank, M200, Single Round cartridge consists of a brass cartridge case with primer and propellant sealed with a rosette crimp. This cartridge is used for training and ceremonial purposes without blank firing attachment (BFA) and in M16A2/A4 Series Rifles and M4 Carbine fitted with BFA. This item is Code A, approved for service use. (E01101) 5.56mm Blank, M200 Linked w/M27 links f/SAW cartridge consists of a brass cartridge case with primer and propellant sealed with a rosette crimp. This cartridge is used in the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) Machine Gun with a Blank Firing Adapter, and it is designed to simulate firing during training exercises. This item is Code A, approved for service use. (E04607) 5.56mm M855A1 Ball Cartridges and M856A1/XM1201 Tracer Cartridges Enhanced Performance Round (EPR) are linked in a 4-Ball/1-Tracer configuration with the M27 link for use in the M249 Machine Gun. The M855A1 Ball Cartridge has a steel penetrator and non-lead slug surrounded by a copper jacket. The M856A1 Tracer Cartridge is lead free and provides a visible red-light signature through its trajectory. The M856A1 Tracer Cartridge provides visible signature of fire out to 900 meters. The XM1201 EPR Tracer Cartridge has a steel penetrator and provides a visible light signature through its trajectory with a limited view during its early trajectory, providing visible signature of fire out to 900 meters and a limited view visible signature, to the shooter only, for first 300 meters. In FY 2021, this item transitioned to a lead-free version under the new DODIC AC39. This item is Code A, approved for service use. (E96111) 5.56mm Marking Red, M1042 is used for force-on-force training engagements. The cartridge can be fired with the existing M4 Carbine and the M16A2/A3/A4 Rifles with the use of a conversion bolt. The projectile leaves a mark upon impact (similar to paintball), thus enabling after action evaluation of training scenarios. It differs from paintball in that it is a full, complete cartridge with projectile and cartridge case containing a propulsion system for a low velocity launch. In FY 2021, this item transitioned to a lead-free version under the new DODIC AC40. This item is Code A, approved for service use. (E96120) 5.56mm Marking Blue, M1071 is used for force-on-force training engagements. The cartridge can be fired with the existing M249 Squad Automatic Weapon with the use of the conversion kit. (E96125) 5.56mm Short Range Training M1037 clipped cartridge will be used in live fire training scenarios. The M1037 clipped cartridge permits training in adjacent training areas due to its reduced Surface Danger Zone (SDZ) and can be fired with existing M4 weapons. This cartridge is used for Military Operations/Urban Terrain (MOUT) operational training. This item is Code A, approved for service use.

Justification — CTG, 5.56MM, All Types
FY 2026 Base Budget supports critical Army Title 10 war reserve/operational, training, and test requirements in accordance with Department of Defense Instruction 3000.04 (Munitions Requirements Process) and Army Regulation 5-13 (Total Army Munitions Requirements Process and Prioritization System). War reserve requirements support Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) approved Combatant Commander Operational Plans, Homeland Defense, and other OSD-directed missions. Training requirements support individual and collective training of Active and Reserve Component forces at Army schools, home station, and the combined training centers. Test requirements support the development, fielding, safety, and quality assurance of Army munitions and equipment throughout their life cycle. In accordance with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (P.L. 110-181), this item is necessary for use by the active and reserve components of the Armed Forces for homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities. The FY 2026 Budget supports the Minimum Sustaining Rates at both Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) as well as the Second Source facility in Oxford, MS. FY 2026 Total dollars in the amount of $128.283 million supports the procurement of 245.566 million cartridges. (E01100) 5.56mm, Blank, M200, Single Round cartridge is a training unique item not used in combat. The FY 2026 request supports annual training and builds a depot level in accordance with the Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $10.692 million support the procurement of 36.825 million M200 Blank Cartridges. Type classification date: prior to 1977 (E01101) 5.56mm, Blank, M200 Linked F/SAW is a training unique item not used in combat. The FY 2026 request supports annual training and builds a depot level in accordance with the Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $6.256 million support the procurement of 13.902 million M200 Blank Linked Cartridges. Type classification date: prior to 1977 (E04607) 5.56mm M855A1 Ball and M856A1/XM1201 Tracer Cartridges are training standard items used in both training and combat. The FY 2026 request supports annual training and builds a war reserve inventory in accordance with the Army's procurement goals. FY 2026 Base procurement dollars in the amount of $12.538 million support the procurement of 17.261 million M855A1 Ball and M856A1/XM1201 Tracer Cartridges. FY 2026 Base dollars in the amount of $0.139 million support the COCOM requirement for procurement of 0.204 million M855A1 Ball and M856A1/XM1201 Tracer Cartridges to deter potential adversaries and support Operation Atlantic Resolve (OAR). Type classification date: 2008 (E04608) 5.56mm Tracer, M856A1/XM1201, Single Round Bullet is a training standard item used in training and combat.
